I have an '88 h30 with Yanmar 2GM 18 hp. I have been getting a lot more water in the bilge than I belive should be. I believe it may be the stuffing box leaking from what I have been reading. Can someone tell me or point me towards the repacking procedure. I do not recall seeing it in the manual and I am going to the boat this weekend. I always have water in the bilge and it triggers the pump every 30 minutes or so. Thanks again for everyones help with the fuel problem I had a few weeks ago it ended up being all I needed to do was back off the set screw on the high pressure pump crank her over and tighten back up. (I wish they mentioned it in the manual.)Then wipe the fuel up...

1 or 2 drips a minute

You don't mention if your boat is in the water or out. If in the water, you can check the drips to see if you are getting the correct amount. You can do this tied to a dock. Start the engine and put the transmission in forward or reverse, whichever way your boat is held by your dock lines to keep you from slamming into the dock. Take a flashlight down below or where ever you can view the stuffing box. Warning! the shaft will be turning. DO NOT put your hands near the shaft. Make sure your clothing will not become tangled also. With the shaft turning, you should get 1 to 2 drops every minute. This is what keeps the shaft cool. Shut the engine down. There should be no more drips if the shaft is not turning. You might try tightening the nut before you replace the packing, and see if that helps. If you need to replace the packing, it isn't a big job. I am attaching a link below that has a description on how to replace the packing and adjust the nut. This can be done in or out of the water.

One more link

This one is by Don Casey. You can buy his excellent books at Boat U.S. or West Marine. A must for a 15 year old boat. Follow link below.

How to determine size of packing?

How do I know what size flax packing to buy ahead of time? I have a 1 inch shaft on my Hunter 37C.

Teflon Packing

Bob, I have a '92 sister boat to yours and I'm sorry, I have forgotten what size packing I put in last year, and my boat is a ways away and it's -24 outside right now... Anyway, I believe if you go to the Hunter (mfgr) web site (and there's a link on this site) that there is a section there that tells you the size you need. I went with Teflon style packing after the year old flax packing was hard, shrunken and leaking. The easiest way to do it is on the hard and it's nice to have the packing removal tool- has a curlycue on the end of a flexible shaft that should help you get all the old packing out. I got the packing from a company that is called WL Gore and assoc. at 1-800-455-2791. I have absolutely no affiliation with them but was upset with the short life of the flax stuff and wanted to try something new. It's a little more expensive but so far so good. BOB

Pump Every 30 Minutes?

Are we overlooking something here? If my bilge pump was going off every 30 minutes in my H-30T I absolutely would not sleep until I discovered why. If the stuffing box is the source of that amount of water you should see a steady stream and not just a drip. If you don't see a stuffing box stream I would certainly investigate quickly as it could be a BIG BIG problem. Let us know what you find.

if yours has the standard bronze box. Hunter Customer Service can tell you for sure. Bud

Hunter said 3/16" if its Bronze Box with 1" shaft

I will pick up some 3/16" PTFE impregnated packing. I do need to inspect the shaft. I've only had her for one season. Thanks for the response. Mike
