Stuffing Box

The stuffing box on my boat is similar to the
one pictured. Notice the flange at the end of
the threads has no flat spots.

How is one supposed to hold the stuffing box
still while tightening or loosening the packing
gland nut?

I ended up putting a large vice-grip onto the
threads (where nothing will ever be threaded)
to hold the thing still while tightening.

The picture on ebay is reversed...that is the right side of the flange in the picture is what is facing out of the boat and where the shaft comes in from

The thinner locking nut moves back and forth and is what adjusts the about of available thread the sealing nut has.

Then you tighten the sealing nut which has the flax material in it down ON the locking nut.

One wrench to hold the locking nut secure and one wrench to tighten down the sealing nut.

I've enclosed a few pictures...I know the wrench is on the threads, but I did that because I couldn't take the picture and keep the wrench in the correct spot...The white PVC is just a piece of tubing I use to push the new sealing material up into the bolt...thanks Mainsail!

Good luck!
Chris
