I need some advice or confirmation;
I need to repack my stuffing box and after asking "Mother Hunter" I am still not 100% sure. In the criptic message that i received from them I am led to believe that I need 5/16ths flax stuffing material. Do you concur or is there a better option?
Thanks,
Rook

I think you need to post more detail like size of shaft, stuffing box type and also include pictures. Mine uses 3/16" packing for the 1" shaft flexible packing gland assembly.

Lee: Typically a 1" shaft has used 3/16" flax as I remember.

As far as the procedure you need to cut about 3 rings of flax with approx. 45 degree angle on each end so the fit together.

Then get a pick (cheap at Harbor Freight) and pick out all of the old stuff. You will get some water seepage but it is not that bad. Then insert each of the rings one at a time. Be sure the the joints are off set. Then tighten down the nut just until the drip stops.

Then you should run the engine with the tranmission in gear for a while and be sure that you get some drip (3-5 drips/min) while the shaft is turning. Once you stop the engine the shaft should not be very warm.

Then you should check it after you run the engine for a short while to be sure that it is not too tight or too loose.

On my 1990 Hunter 33.5 with the Yanmar 2GM20F engine and a 1.00" shaft diameter, the stuffing box does take 5/16" Flax packing. I use the Teflon impregnated flax packing material. I place of the middle ring I use the green Teflon putty (is it called "SynTef" ??), that gimes me a dripless shaft seal that works well and never gets warm.
