OK, I've checked all past forums about how to repack the stuffing box and I believe I will not have a problem doing this project. However, there is one unresolved issue: In the water or Out of the water. There was so many opinions. I own a 1984 Catalina 30. I am asking other Catalina 30 owners for advise. Have you completed this in the water and what should I know. I do not want to haul the boat if I can help it. As always, thanks for all of the advise.

I think you are going to get various opinions. I got familiar with my stuffing box awhile back when my bilge was constantly wet with 2" of water...it was always pretty dry before that. I got the right tools and had some difficulty "unfreezing" the locking nut, but once I did it was pretty easy to adjust.

Some will disagree, but with that "working knowledge", I would try to tackle that while in the water to avoid a haul-out....but would be VERY organized with the process, materials, etc. before starting. I would also make sure the bilge pump was working well. You could even put some plumbers putty under the boat where shaft exits to limit water intrusion (just remember to remove it before starting the engine)

As a contingency, I would probably do it on a day and time my yards travel lift was open:)....just in case. Good luck and let us know what you decide to do.
