S2 9.2A Battleship Cove
getting ready to put our "new" S2 9.2 A in the water. Going thru everything that will sink the boat to ensure its in good shape. One questionable is the stuffing box. The boat has been out of the water for 5 years. When we surveyed it, the prop shaft would squeal like a pig when turned. We figured the packings were pretty dried out after 5 years. Tonite I shot a good spray of water at the point where the shaft enters the hull, attempting to drive water up thru the stuffing box. I used full pressure with my nozzle set to "stream" and really got in around the opening as best I could. My helper reported a few (16 to be exact) drips from the box as I sprayed. I know they all leak and expect that it will swell and tighten up once its in the water.
Has anyone had to mess with a stuffing box, and how difficult is it to adjust or repack this?
