Has anyone had any problems with the hose connection in stuffing box? My packing gland seems fine but I have detected small cracks on the hose. Not an easy fix. Should I be concerned? No leaks yet.

I've replaced several

Never had one leak or fail but I changed them when the shaft was out and the vessel is 20 years old

Change It

My stuffing box hose slipped off a worn and corroded stearn tube and nearly sank the boat. The real problem with this area is that, it is below the water level without the option of closing a value. The hose has to hold out the water. I would change when you can.

Replace it Quickly

Friend of mine with a 1986 Pearson 28-II nearly had his boat sink in his slip due to a potential failure of the packing gland hose. While this hose "appeared" to be in good shape, the underside which you can't see, was rotting away. This is where water pools in the gland. He quickly had his boat hauled and the rubber hose replaced. In looking at the old hose, we could easily push a pencil through it... Don't wait, do it now.

When you do replace it try to take a piece to a NAPPA parts place and get both the correct inside diameter as well as possibly going up a level to a double reinforced type of pressure resistant hose that will last longer. You only need less than a foot so you can't afford not to get the best!
