Thanks, Maine Sail. We can get into all the details as we go, but the SIMPLE thing I learned from this is: drip, drip, drip doesn't hurt and NO DRIP can.

Love 'dem old wives, though!!! Most of us have one or two layin' around!

650 deg F?????!!!!!!

Not sure what you are trying to suggest RighH. I can attest to sandpaper that scratches just fine at significantly lower temps. So while it may turn to a gas at high temps (my car exhaust manifold never gets over 400ish BTW) not sure why that is relevant.
Clearly lubrication is important. Water is the lub in all cases so let her drip

All righty, then...guess I can't go wrong adjusting the nut to drip (at least) a little bit more.
Pascal's wager, of a sort, I suppose...

Thanks for all of the replies.

so drip-less means.....it drips LESS than the other types of packing.....

as opposed to -

does not drip at all..thus heating, wearing, scoring the shaft..

Maine I saw your "drip-less" which led to my assumption above...

...my drip-less shaft seal is water cooled and the shaft is damp to the touch after use...warm, but definitely not hot...this is a good thing??

Your thoughts?

Warm

Very lightly warm to the touch not hot because hot is not good and some drip is what you want is what I remember and now I have PSS dripless meaning no drip and any packing type will have a drip not dripless just some better packing last longer but not dripless.
That is what I have seen but no expert.
