May not need to

Sometimes the leakage is easily repaired by tightening up the two competing bolts that keep things tight. The trick is finding the right balance where you still get some trickle when underway (but not in port).

I need to replace too...

along with the cutlass bearing, I'm also going to replace the stuffing box. The guys at my boat yard tell me to just remove the old box and take it in to a reputable Marine supply store. They should be able to set you up. I've also got to drop and reglass my rudder. Can't wait to start that project.

Just did mine

Just replaced my stuffing box, shaft log, cuttlass bearing and a lot of other things. The stuffing box uses 1/4 packing. For Tim, check your shaft log very carefully, mine had turned brittle and broke off when I was removing the hose and stuffing box. Had to replace it, I replaced the stuffing box at the same time.

How did you get to it?

I mean, how did you get the panel between the quarter berth, and the engine compartment off so you could do the work? David Lady Lillie

Pulling the panel

David, I didn't pull the panel. I lifted the engine out of the boat, removed the back bulk head, fuel tank, hoses etc. I was replacing all the thru hull fittings, hoses, and redoing the rudder post bearings, and doing some rewireing, so I wanted the engine and fuel tank out of the way. To make it easier to work on the rudder post I also removed the engine mounts. I put the boat back in the water last week and will be installing the engine this week. But, to answer your question. The side panel is held in by screws from behind. You would have to remove the engine, bulkhead, fuel tank to get to the screws. I know that stinks but thats the way it is.
