Stuffing Box on 272

The manual says to use 3/16 flax, but it seemed a slightly loose fit even when tightened up (It also went in much easier than I expected). I therefore removed two rounds and replaced them with 1/4 -- which was a struggle to get in but which is firm as a rock. Could it be too tight? Should I go back to the 3/16? ALSO: any sense in using TEFLON TAPE when re-engaging the threads (I am thinking that would ensure that water goes all through the box rather than dripping at the lock-nut).

I'd use...

...a PSS dripless seal. See mine installed at the link below. Took me less than three hours from start to finish.Cheers,Bob

Good results with TefPack

With this being my first season with the 272LE I thought I'd try new packing before laying out for a PSS. Installed three layers of 1/4" TefPack ( manual's wrong with 3/16") lubricated with good silicon grease, adjusted seal so that it was just slightly warm to touch during operation. Bingo! dry not a drop so far with 20 hrs of running. At just a few bucks its worth the try, Good luck and good sailing.

Thanks Brian for confirming my guess that the manual was wrong. I launched today -- staying with 1/4 inch flax for this year and all seems OK so far.

Clarification re TefPack

The reference to "slightly warm" was at initial set up only,as too tight will really get very hot. Now after the 20 hrs there is barely any noticeable temp rise and dry. Would expect some seepage in time but should be adjustable.
