stuffing box material size?

My local Hunter dealer recomended I purchased 3/8" packing for a 1986-31' Hunter with a plastic stuffing box. I just can't seem to get the stuff in! Does any one have any suggestions? How many rings? What is the metal ring below the plastic ring? Is 3/8" the right size? Please advise!

3/8" should work, and it's equidistant so you don't need to turn it on its side. See the Archives for reams on the stuffing box, including my saga. Type in "stuffing box."

Should be the correct size!

Jerry: I think that this is the correct size. You can go the to Hunter Marine Site and check. I think that there is a plastic/nylon washer in the box at presses on the flax. You probably need to remove this before you can remove any old material and install the new. Then you want to be sure to place the washer over the new packing before tightening down.
