My 1976 H-27 is overdue for maintenance on the stuffing box while the boat is out of the water. How do you reach this thing! Trying to go over the Yanmar 8hp engine is next to impossible. Do I need to remove the exhaust manifold and maybe even the engine cylinder head first? Help!

Access

Hello Doug: I have a '78 h27, but it has a 2 cyl. yanmar. I can access the stuffing box, by removing the horizontal companion way shelf, and then the vertical steps. If you need further access, the quarterberth wall, will come out with screws. I have only had to remove this wall when checking the muffler, and hoses. BTW you don't need to replace the stuffing, if you can still adjust the nuts, and slow the drip, to two drops per minute, while in gear. Good luck red

And if you loosen the nuts you can't move it forward far enough on the shaft to remove and replace the packing material. I removed the shaft and then removed the hose clamps and all the hardware. David H-27 Renegade
