Below the stuffing box there is the rubber tube with hose clamps attached. When I turn the shaft by hand, at a certain position, the water squirts out the bottom, at a good clip, towards where the shaft leaves the boat. My question is, what is under the tube and is the water actually coming from the body of the stuffing box?? It is also dripping from the other end of the stuffing box.

Needs Attention

Sounds like the rubber hose is loose on the shaft tube. Try tightening the hose clamp, if this dosen"t stop the leak you may have to replace the rubber as it may be cracked or worn, give it a good inspection including the bottom, use a dentists mirror to check the underside if you can get one. Do not let this go it could potentially sink you vessel. If you need to replace the hose you will most likley have to haul. Stuffing box end should only leak when shaft is turning and then only one drip at a time

Additional

The rubber hose is the water tight seal between your propeller shaft and the fiberglass shaft tube molded into the hull. The hose is clamped to the fiberglass hull tube at the bottom and the stuffing box is the seal around the prop shaft at the other end.

Kevin a quick haul is the safe way to replace the hose. The cost of a new shaft log is not that much and if you go that route you can pre assemble the new hose to the bronze nipple on the shaft log and install the whole works at the same time. You need to do an allignment in any case and I like the boat to be floating when thats done

Check the shaft log

I had a similar problem on my former boat (1980 H30) and it turned out that the bronze shaft log had corroded and fractured. The yard had to replace the whole thing along with the hose and stuffing box. We could not determine the exact cause but some electrolysis coupled with the shaft rubbing on the shaft tube caused it to fail.

Replace the Whole Thing

Better safe than sorry. Cost of shaft log versus the cost of the boat.... not hard to figure.
