A 1980 Hunter 27 would likely have a conventional shaft log, hose and stuffing box, not a dripless type. You should be able to find replacement double reinforced hose at autoparts stores such as NAPA.If you remove and check the cross section of your existing hose it will have either one or two rows of woven reinforcing.Try to match or exceed the existing wall thickness and number of rows of reinforcing with the new hose. Make sure the inner diameter of the hose matches or is slightly smaller than the stern tube and stuffing box outer diameters for a tight fit, and use two stainless steel hose clamps an each end.Use fine wet-or-dry paper to smooth and polish the existing prop shaft. If the shaft has been scored or grooved, make the new hose a little longer or a little shorter so the stuffing box will not remain at the same wear spot. Reinstall the stuffing box with new teflon impregnated flax packing.IMHO, when a dripless stuffing box fails with a damaged bellows, its not going to be a slow leak. However, conventional flax compression stuffing boxes can be adjusted, tightened or even have the flax repacked withthe boat in the water.
