My oil filter will not come off (Universal M18 engine). Does anyone have any suggestions? I already did the screwdiver as leverage, and attempted with a filter wrench. Should I chisel around the gasket?

What I do...

1. Hammer a screwdriver through it and use as a lever to loosen. 2. Try one of those oil filter wrenches that fits the end of the filter.

easy way

Take a piece of sandpaper and fold it in half and put it between your oil filter wrench and the filter, works every time.

Grip wrenches

I just bought some of those grip wrenches from WalMart that are advertized on TV. They have a black elastic band attached to a blue handle. I know the commericals on TV are rather cheezy but the wrenchs really work. I was amazed how well they worked in confined spaces. I used them on the Racor, fuel and oil filters. A piece of sandpaper underneath the band might really be great....Good luck

hot

Run the engine and make it hot! Heat will loosen the joint to the point your wrench should work

Chisel

All of the methods mentioned are good valid methods. But NEVER try to chisel around the gasket area.

Got it off

I got it off using a 1 inch wide metal sheetrock spatula around the sea,l and then working back and forth with a screwdriver jammed through the oil filter

Great!

Great! Now check the sealing surface carefully, and when installing the new filter (I guess you've done this already!) oil the seal and not too tight. jv
