I am attempting to replace the original spreaders on my 1980 C-30 standard rig using the new spreader kit from Catalina Direct. I removed the 3 nuts on the port side of the mast and removed the port side spreader and bracket with no difficulty. I was also able to remove the 2 small bolts. However, I have been unable to get the large bolt out. It will turn quite easily, by has shown no inclination to come through the mast. I have hammered on it vigorously to no avail. I am concerned about damaging the mast if I get too enthuastic. I have also applied substantial quantities of penetrating oil. Does anyone have any suggestions? Will applying heat help? I am reluctant to apply too much heat because of the wiring and foam rubber inside the mast. Does anyone know the approximate diameter of the compression tube inside the mast? A person at the boat yard suggested that the bolt is corroded inside the compression tube. For that to be possible, the compression tube would have to be only slightly larger than the bolt. Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated.

Re: Have you tried

I had exactly this scenario last year with my 1981 Catalina. In my case, the bolt was able to move a little (i.e about 1/2 inch up/down), but probably corroded/expanded so that it was not removeable.

I ultimately bit the bullet and used a hacksaw to get each end flush with the mast. I was then able to push the bolt out of one hole and then the other (with some judicious pounding). It turned out that the compression post itself (in this case) was not holding the bolt.

Good luck-once the bolt is out, it is not too difficult replacing the rest of the hardware.
