Ahoy everyone.....Has anyone that has a swing keel on their boat had any problems bringing the keel up? We have snapped two cables as the keel seems to be stuck and not moving. Any ideas why? I guess we are going to have to haul out and see if the boatyard can help. We need to have her on the trailer in the next few days and time is running out for us! Thanks...Susan

Did you pull out the bolt that holds the keel down

Or is the trunk full of marine growth? good luck. tom s/v GAIA

Where is it?

Tom....both divers didn't mention any marine growth as they cleaned the bottom. Not sure where the keel bolt is. My husband is the mechanic here so I let him do the heavy stuff. We have two boats. Our Hunter 34 obviously isn't the problem, it is our Balboa 26. Thanks for your help...:(

Somewhere in the trunk is the pivot pin. Also in the trunk will be a removable bolt or pin which locks the board down. It should be hidden in plain sight! *pop

Lots of help in the archives

the first post I put up here 4 years ago had to do with my stuck centerboard. Check the archives of this site, and you will find a treasure trove of questions and advice, bitching and moaning; virtually anything and everything about swing keels, centerboards and their component parts. Good luck.

Thanks for the help with the keel

Ahoy gang.....Thanks much I appreciate your help. I think my husband has found the pin and has raised the keel. Since we bought the Balboa on a lien sale we don't know much about her. We have a big boat, Hunter 34' and if her keel even moved an inch that would be a huge problem....so we are just learning and having fun with the new addition to the family! Thanks again...Susan San Diego

You had us all worried . . .

. . . that there was something more serious going on with the keel. Not to long ago there was a post from someone who had barnicles holding the keel up in place. Sounded nasty. Presumably the "keel pin" you found was a lock down bolt of some sort. The fact that it was stronger than the keel cable, you may want to look into some modifications of this pin. I am thinking that if you were to use it to hold the keel down while sailing, and you ran aground (it will happen) the keel pin (being so strong) will cause damage to the boat (keel trunk). My boat has a lock down bolt that just tightens against the keel (kind of like a vice grip). It will give a little bit on impact. You may want to modify your keel pin to something that will give a little bit, if needed. Regards, Ted
