Has anyone replaced their engine stop (decompression) cable ? Mine stuck somehow, and I can't seem to free it. It turns when the knob is twisted, but won't move in/out. It worked fine and then it just "stuck". Where is a good (inexpensive ?) place to get a replacement ? I believe it is stainless wire. It's on a Yanmar 3GM30F.

Gene, OK, your talking two different controls

Yanmar 3GMs have the cable at the control panel hooked to the fuel cutoff on the fuel pump. The decompression levers are usually not hooked to anything but can be if so desired. I think it's a control thing with some operators. For me, I eliminated the cable and went to a solenoid shut off. I also installed a push button switch to crank the engine, at the engine box side. A matching switch also activates the cut-off solenoid. It's mounted next to the start button and even uses the same power feed. Now I can kill the engine or start it at the cockpit panel or working on the engine below. See photos #46 & 118 on my web site. And this is a very worth while modification. I've never heard of an unhappy customer. Oh, the solenoid is in #47

mine has.....

a cable just inside the companionway, and it goes to a lever on the starboard, bottom front of the engine. Is that a fuel cutoff ?? When you pull out the cable it kills the engine. The knob is labeled "ENGINE STOP". There is no engine stop cable on the panel in the cockpit or on the pedestal. What solenoid did you use. That's a good idea, and probably less expensive than a stainless cable at $65

Gene, don't go by what I spent.

I bought mine in Key West back in '94. Seems like I've got a hundred dollars into it. (not counting the engine box switch) These things are standard diesel engine cut-offs. I think every diesel ever made (except Yanmar) has them. Just call any retailer. Your pull lever does the same thing but I've only heard of them as a backup to the control panel shutoff. I think that's the place to put it first, then go from there. It's a safety thing.

$65?!?!?!

You must be kidding! Jeez, you sure that thing ain't platinum? I just replaced my engine stop cable assembly after it slowly bound up then froze. I pulled out the cable from the sheath and it had no damage but there was some kind of impediment in the sheath. Anyway, a quick trip to our local Yanmar dealer (Mastry Engine Center) and $20.80 later(with tax) I was in business. It was an exact replacement. They stock 3 different lengths. Mine was 9'.

Gene, the STOP cable...

...is actually a fuel shutoff cable. You will see it, probably in two ways. 1) A pull cable that activates the fuel shutoff valve on the lower, front, starboard side of the engine near the throttle lever (as indicated by another poster). Be sure that is just isn't frozen and stiff. If it is, use a penetrating oil (PB Blaster) to loosen it and then a spray lithium grease to protect it. 2) A switch-activated solenoid that pulls the shutoff lever to kill the engine.

$21 for a new cable

at the Yanmar dealer. That's for a 6', with "Engine Stop" on the knob in both English AND Japanese !!
