Have an in-mast furler on my 361 that is difficult to pull out even when the vang and main sheet are loose. By difficult I mean I have to put all my 210 pounds into it to get it started. Is this normal, or should it pull easily like a jib furler? If this isn't normal, how do I solve the problem?

I have had the roller furling on my 361 pull hard at times. It was usually related to having the halyard pulled a little too tight. It would work great after an adjustment. Easy enough for my wife to handle

This is not normal and I was experiecning a similar difficutly as explained. I think my problem was due to the battens and the covers (if you will). Last year, I spent about $100 to have them re-sewn and was still having a problem with 2006 vintage sails. The sail kept getting stuck, whether I was letting out or taking it in.

So I contacted Neil Pyride and explained this problem and another that I was having (I had some UV rot on the leading edge of the sail where it sticks out, when it is all furled up. These folks were pretty good, I explained my problem, they indicated they were hearing similiar issues from others and I sent my sail to them. They fixed both the UV rot at nocharge and added a larger pocket to cover where you insert the battens.

Of course I have not tried out the sail yet as I did this in Dec 08 (it takes about 4-5 weeks for this as they send the sail to Asia), but I am hoping their fixes covering the battens work.

Inhual line may need replaced. It swells and frays as it gets older. I replace the line every other year to keep it operating smoothly.

The furler on my '94 OC400 has been a PITA since I got the boat, 13 years ago, but I did discover a few things. Check the archives; I did a long piece about it some years ago.

Thanks for the replies! I raised the topping lift a bit and loosened the halyard a bit and it seems to be working much easier now. Tried to replace the furler line, but the locking bolt is seized, so need to figure out how to break it loose.

In addition to all of the above, double check to insure that lines running back to the cockpit are not crossed and rubbing against each other. Also flush the lower bearings with fresh water, lube (McLube) all fittings and soak the lines with llubricant

I just got over the same problem with my 08-343. The sail was hopelessly jammed and I wrote to US Spars for advice. Julian Crisp,(the CEO) actually stopped by my boat during a trip to Chicago and went up in the bosun's chair where he spent over two hours pulling the main out inch by inch. Once we got it out, we shortened all the battens by an inch so that they sunk lower into the pockets and did not add to the thickness at the leech. We also cut off the tell-tales for the same reason. One of the battens came out looking like a corkscrew and Bob Pattison from Pryde Sails replaced it gratis. Can't say enough about the support from US Spars and Pryde Sails. I don't think anyone other than Julian could have gotten that sail out. I was prepared to have to cut it out. Everything seems OK now.
