Looking for info on a strut removal 1983 30' oday
I see 4 Phillip head screws or bolts on the strut outside of the boat.
on the inside everything is covered by the gas tank. Does the gas tank need to come out to remove the strut ?
would it be easier to drop the rudder ?
any info would be appreciate.

I had an O'day 27 that I had to remove and re-bed the strut for. The four bolts went up and into nuts that were glassed in place on the inside of the hull.... underneath the gas tank. Kind of a PITA to get to but as I recall, I decided to replace the tank "while I was in there". The reason I needed to remove the tank was because one of the nuts broke loose from the glass and there was no other way to get it out. Not sure if in your case you need to drop the rudder to pull the shaft. I didn't on my 27 but I do need to drop the rudder on my 35 to pull the shaft (for cutlass bearing replacement).

Thanks for the info I was hoping that there were no bolts on the other end. Ill pull the tank tomorrow
I'm assuming you just chip the glass out of the way to get to the nuts ?
do you re glass the nuts back in ?

Hold on! The nuts were glassed in on purpose so that you wouldn't have to remove the tank. Just back out the bolts with the nuts in place. On mine, one nut broke free and I couldn't get the bolt out without removing the tank. Hopefully, yours will all be removable from the outside of the hull without having to remove the tank.

Why do you want to remove the strut? If for the cutless, as CS suggests there are tools to make it easier for you. I would try to avoid removing a strut or dropping a rudder on any boat, especially ones as old as ours. Do you have any other options?

Danny Thank you you for the info those 4 screws broke loose fairly easy. #4 Phillips screw driver and a pipe wrench. Strut came off, shaft will slide right in.
I'm buying a lottery ticket tonight.
