Hello all! I hope most of you have made it thus far through hurricane season. Got a tough question here. bear in mind I have not contacted Hunter Marine yet. Is it possible to pull and change the strut on my 93 legend 40.5 while still in the water? My mechanic/Diver seems to think he can do it no problem. Would like a little feedback from those who have some experience with this. Any info would help and be appreciated.

thanks

Jeff

I can't see any way...

He could do this without getting water in the boat. Lots of water. But I'm all ears if someone knows a way.

Removed strut and prop shaft in the water

A few years ago the stern tube broke and let in more than a little water. A professional diver was able to replace the stern tube by removing the prop shaft and strut in the water. He had done much work like this before and the procedure went well. It is all a matter of putting wooden pegs in the holes left by screws removed, etc. You should be o.k.

Diving versus hauling.

Is it really that cost effective to dive on the boat? Or maybe a matter of no place to haul out. I just know that the prop replacement by divers in the Erie Canal was no less expensive than my recent haulout in Oriental, NC.

There are advantages, I think, to hauling out where you can see and repair everything else that may need work. Or maybe you recently did that. Just curious about the decision I guess.

As far as doing it with a diver it is not a problem. Water will come in but the bilge pump will keep up until he gets the holes plugged.

Possibly Not

Jeff,
I needed to remove the strut from my H376 (1996) and discovered it was bonded into its recess with what I took to be 5200. I removed the four bolts and then there were several hours of hacking with a Stanley knife and much pushing and shoving (and swearing) before it came away.
This was not a job which could have been tackled whilst afloat.

Then, having cleaned all the 5200 out of the recess, the strut went further into the recess than previously thus preventing perfect alignment with the engine. One doesn't discover this until it is all bolted up nice and solid again - more cussing!

on your boat, but not mine!

Removing the strut required removing 4 bolts, you may need new backing materials and who knows what other problems you are going to run into.

I cannot believe that it is cheaper for him to do it in the water (much more difficult to work underwater. I assume that they are going to charge you something like $400 to pull and splash your boat with a powerwash. If this guy cannot make this work, you take a chance of taking on a large amount of water before you can "two" you vessel to the haul out area ('cause you prop will have been removed).

Ask him how many of these he has done!
