I have a 2003 Hunter 356 and we just learned the prop strut is broken. Does anyone know if this is covered by warranty or if Hunter has had a problem w/the struts?
Dave,Unless the strut was defective they do not break by themselves - you have to break them. Normally by becoming entangled in a chain or rope with the engine running at a good speed. If the metal was defective it should show quite clearly, especially if de-zincified.
Donalex may have hit on it. Electrolysis could have contributed to de-zincing the bronze which it is made of and thereby weakened it enough so that in combination with some other event it could break. As an editorial comment, struts aren't generally one of those items that get overdesigned very much.
