We are considering using a stripper this year for removing the bottom paint. Someone had posted a while ago that an issue of Practical Sailor had done a comparison of the brands. Does anyone know which issue this was in? I would like to read up more on this and see the comparisons before making a final decision. ~~~_/)~~~ Patti Lady Di

Bottom Paint Stripper

I just completed a bunch of research since I need to strip my bottom paint too. I finally picked Aqua Strip by Back To Nature. No Methyl Chloride, bad VOC's, it's water based and does not require neutralization after use. Checked out forum opinions and got a response from someone that knows a boatyard that swears by it. I got some and tried a test on my rudder. It worked very well. Should be used in temps between 60-80 degrees so if your from New London, Ct. your out for this year (except for this weekend which I missed my opportunity). I found it for $42 a gallon at Sipperstiens in Wethersfield. Check it out on the web.

Thank you Rob

I will look up the brand. We are planning to do this in the spring. Hope it's a warm, dry one. Unlike this past spring.

Hey Jack

I knew someone would catch that. After I sent it out and reread the title I knew for sure I would catch some rasin'. You are quick :)

Don't remember the issue but...

we used Peel Away 1 to remove 16 years of bottom paint this past spring - If you follow the instructions the stuff works great, and is quite safe. Available at Home Depot.

STRIPPING BOTTOM PAINT

RATHER THAN STRIPPING YOURSELF LOOK INTO SODA BLASTING, ROUND THIS AREA IT RUNS BETWEEN 25.00 AND 40.00 PER FOOT, FAST EASY AND EFFECTIVE. GENE REGAN

Deck Paint.

The previous Owner of my PEarson 26 (unfortunately) decided to paint the deck and did a terrible job I want to remove this paint and return the deck to its original textured while gelcoat. I was thinking about using Peel-Away. anybody have experience with deck paint and strippers (the non-female kind)? does anyone know if that paint stripper comparison that practical sailor did can be found online? Thanks, -Adam s/v Josefina P26 s/v Boat A23

FYI

I am just now finishing the stripping part of my bottomm job. I have used Interlux 299E. My hull had three applicatons of red bottom paint. It was good to do about 6 square feet, let set, then a light scrape. All but the residue was removed. After a light sanding I will paint with an epoxy top coat, as this boat will live on a trailer.
