Stripper Rings

I had no idea what a stripper ring was until one broke apart on my Lewmar 40 self tailing winch. This part makes sure the non working end of the active jib sheet is peeled off. Without it, your non working end will jam into the the jaws of your self tailer. My Lewmars are pre 1985 and that company no longer makes parts for that winch, and there are none available, so I was left with a winch that would no longer self tail. New winch was $1200 plus a lot of work to install. I took the remaining stripper ring off and found someone to work up a computerized 3d model, sent it into a 3D printing service and they made me new ones out of nylon. Each ring cost around $40 dollars. I ordered four. They needed to be modified a bit in order to function. It took a several hours to do the first one, but a lot less for the second one. Winches seem to be working fine, now. In the photo, the black one is the original. If you look closely you can see the replacement is not quite the same.

Fantastic work, I didn't realize that there was a 3d printing service. That will be very handy. There's a couple of phone apps that create 3d models of things based on multiple pictures and video which may make the 3d model creation a bit easier (and accurate).

Last time I needed a part for my old Lewmars, they emailed me the original designs to have the part manufactured from. I ended up not needing the part so I never needed to have it made, but perhaps the 3D thing could work parts made of metal?

Company I work for did get a vendor to 3D print metal turbine blades. Cheaper and faster than buying from suppliers as it's not off-the-shelf parts.

I have a pair of non-self tailing Barlow 28's on my boat and would love to have self-tailers. There is a self tailing kit available at $600 each but I could buy a used pair of Lewmars for that. The rubber Winchers are around $80 a pair but don't have the stripper arm. Now you've got me thinking...

Most places will need a release before they produce a part that other companies are selling, like the parts in a self tailer kit.

I found a company out of Buffalo that was willing to do the work. They are Innosek and were excellent to work with.
