I have a 3GM30F yanmar and the fuel filter mounted on the side of the engine has the threads of a nut (with the copper washer) stripped causing fuel to leak out. Can this be repaired with a helio coil or something or does the filter need to be replaced? If it needs replacement, is it difficult to do?

Front

Is it front right side of engine and it should have a round slotted ring to loosen filter.
But if not if it's the racor I think you can get parts at WM.

Hi Nick,
It is mounted on the right side of the engine with the slotted ring.

slutted ring

You need to turn the slutted ring to loosen the filter can and remove and replace filter as needed.

I think you are talking about the larger of the two screws on top of the fuel filter. This is the 1st bleed screw. Yes. You can retap it with a helicoil. If memory serves it's a M8. Be sure to keep the screw as it's ported. Might also be a good idea to replace the copper washer while your at it.

Remove

I would remove the whole filter so it would be easier to remove this screw and replace the screw and washer maybe with vise gripes.

The filter unit is easy to remove to work on. Disconnect the two fuel lines and undo the two mounting bolts at the top of the mounting flange and it will fall into you hand.

Unfortunately you can't get the "strainer body" as a replacement piece but must buy the whole filter ("strainer") assembly to get it, part # 124790-55601 for the 3GM.

Thanks Don, after reading your comment I found a Yanmar dealer and he said to unhook it just like you mentioned and bring it down and they would put a helio coil or something and I could re mount it. This would be 30 min. labour for me to do it or 3 hours for them to send someone down twice.
I like to do things myself if I can both to save money as well as to learn.
I will post how it went.

hey guys, from what I have learned, almost all of our diesels have these aluminum or brass bleed screws, and they are very easy to strip the threads. When opening or especially closing use a small wrench, I use it in my fingers only and this is tight enough. You will see if its leaking. Fair Winds Red

Here's a pic of the top of the filter to show you how it's mounted on the engine block.

I subscribe to trying to fix it yourself rather than keep a mfgr's parts department flush with cash!

Good luck with the repair...

Yup, thats it Dan. Will pull it off in the next day or two and then get a helio coil installed in it. Thanks.

Well I disconnected the complete filter. (very simple job) and took to to the yanmar dealer for the coil. The mechanic said he would have to charge a minimum of 1/2 hour or $60 and leave it overnight. The parts man said a new one cost $90 and came with a filter, and he had it in stock.
So, for an extra $20, I chose the new filter and installed it myself. (a very simple job)
Thanks for all the comments.
