Im thinking about replacing the stripes that run along the cabin and sides of my H28.5. Do I paint them on, use the decals and where would I buy the decals? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Rick

Need to get the old ones off first.

Rick: You need to remove the old ones first. You can use a heat gun, hair dryer, or the infamous Eraser (check the Photo Forum, destriping made easy?). I think you can either contact Hunter or look in the catalogues like W/M for the stripes. I do not think you would want paint.

you can do either

SOme people paint, some use the tape you can buy, it is really your choice. The tape is available in any of the marine stores. You can do a nice job with the paints - you can thin with Penetrol since these don't need to be rock hard - they are just trim. Invest in the expensive masking tape and use single runs of tape for the border. (The green tape is supposed to be better than the blue tape, check at auto supply or home improvement.)

remove stripes

I have a 1988 Legend 35 and removed the body stripes last spring. Used a heat gun and a new 2 inch paint scraper. After you heat the first 12 inches by moveing the heat gun back and forth lift a edge with the the knife then start pulling very slowely and keep the heat on ahead of you. Dont let in bobble to long or the tape will break and you will have to find a new edge . It took about 20 minutes for each stripe down each side. For the new ones I got a exact color and size match at a trick up truck accesory shop. When you pull the old stripe their will be glossey gelcoat under the stripe so you just follow that gloss stripe to install the new stripe. s/v Cheeseburger in Paradise

Terry's right

Using a hairdryer, do a few inches at a time, slowly peeling back with a straight razor, and being careful not to nick the surface. Don't even think of applying the new tape yourself. Get a trained signmaker to do it, usually someone who works the marina. For $50 of labor, you'll get it right the first time.

wanted to replace mine too

I did contact Hunter about the stripes. They don't make them any more. You would have to cut your own. My suggestion is get someone to do it for you. Or paint. I think that is the route I am heading.

Tape Stripes

When you think about the fine line taping and sanding between coats, possibly two coats, etc, you will find the W.M.tape is much easier. I used West Marine 2" wide silver and 4" wide blue for the hull stripes. I did the cabin top stripes by taping lengths to the top of a wood picnic table and measuring and cutting the taper with a straight edge and 'Exacto' knife. The hull will be shiny where the old stripes were removed, however it's easier to make pencil marks on one edge of the 'shiny' gel coat to make placing the stripes easier.
