If the vinyl is thin and cracked, a device that is called an "eraser" is used on the end of an electric drill works well. If the vinyl is still thick & pliable, then you can use an inexpensive steamer that is used to remove wallpaper. You can find them at home improvement centers for about $50.

The steamer will also take much of the adhesive too

Steve is correct. BUT, allow me to add, the eraser works well on vinyl lettering and decals that are in good condition. This is a standard auto body shop tool made by 3M. You needn't buy the motor displayed in the link Steve supplied. You just need a variable speed drill and go slowly (low rpm). I removed several stripes from my 26.5 using the earser whell. No chemicals, no danger to gelcoat; it's magic!

Hair "blow" dryer and plastic scraper
I just removed and replaced the striping on my 23.5. I had to buy a cheap hair dryer but it only took a few minutes to remove the stripe. 'OPPS!' removed the small amount of adhesive left behind. It's really easy to remove.
The real problem is going to be the beautiful BRAND NEW gel coat that was under your stripe. I bought 800, 1200, 1600 grit wet-dry sand paper at the auto store. I wet sanded (by hand) the 'new' gelcoat to bring the shine down the the rest of the gelcoat. I went over the entire boat hull with wet 1200 and then wet 1600 grit. After all of the sanding, I buffed and waxed the hull to be sure I was satisfied with the hull's appearance. I used Acetone to remove the wax before adding the new stripes and name. Then I buffed and waxed AGAIN. I was very happly with the results.
Nearly everytime I launch I get comments and questions on my 'new' boat. A few people have thought it was the new H25.
