Hello All,

Have been off the site for while, trying to fix my boat and enjoying the wonderful weather up here.

Last week, one of our dock neighbors returned from Spain. On my request, I asked them to please bring me back some sand from a beach there. They graciously complied and provided me with two decorative bottles of Spanish sand along with the history behind them.

Now for the strange request. I'm stuck here in NJ until I retire in about 9 years, so to do something productive with my off time, I decided to start a sand collection. If anyone travels abroad or lives anywhere outside of NJ and would like to assist me in this project, I'll provide you with and address to send some sand to me. I could be in something as simple as a ziplock bag or as elaborate as an urn (don't laugh....another dock neighbor has that....and that's a whole other story). If you want to do this, the name of the beach/history/trivia information would be a help too. Maybe I'll start a website with photos and a story about each contribution.

Thanks for your help!

This is a neat idea!

I'm in! Perhaps a sample from one of Mississippi's islands..like Horn or Ship?...once we are back out after the storm stuff dies down.
Glad to see you back!

and a strange suggestion..

.. I have is this: In my opinion a sand collection might have a lot of meaning to a person who has visited every beach from where the sand was collected..... Now.... since that's obviously not feasible to you for the next nine years.... why not make a commitment to RETURN your sand collectibles to their respective beaches when you retire!!!

Illegal?????

Isn't it illegal to bring plant material & soils into the country? Isn't that one of the things customs asks about? I'm not saying it isn't an interesting idea, I'm just wondering about the wisdom of documenting the USDA's case for them.

I can send

I can send you some sand collected from a Louisiana area. I said collected, because after Gustav, there is no telling where it origionally came from. I agree with the idea of returning it all to it's origional place though. Neat idea.
