Strange but True

The January issue of Pacific Yachting magazine has a review of an $800,000 Bermuda 45 designed by C.W. Paine and built by Boston Boatworks. An inset to the primary photograph of the boat in the article describes the following "feature": "A 'crush zone' made of solid foam in the stern maximizes impact resistance in the event of a rear-end collision." Gee, that's the first thing I'd look for in an $800,000 boat. Go figure. Gary Wyngarden S/V Shibumi H335

Your complaint? Didn't I see you driving a Hummer? Hey, for $600,000 you could live on a Princess Cruise ship. Smooth Sea's Ken

Not so strange

It’s just another marketing item. Hunter added Kevlar to the bow of their big sailboats to reinforce the bow against collisions. Etap, the Belgium sailboat manufacturer, have added positive flotation on their sailboats and markets them as unsinkable. On another sailing website, there was a story last month about an Island Packet 350 that got rear-ended by Albin 32+2 in Charlotte harbor. It was a clear day and the Albin 32+2 motor vessel was captained by a retired gentleman and his wife who were returning back to the marina and traveling at about 20 kts. The Albin 32+2 was severely damaged and was taking on water. The IP-350 was dismasted but, surprisingly wasn’t taking on water and was able to motor back to its slip. Both the Albin 32+2 and the IP-350 were both totaled by the collision. Having a "crush zone" in the stern doesn’t sound so strange. Fair Winds. Clyde
