Strange boat

Hi all,

Last weekend while waiting for some projects to be completed we saw a sailboat go by that was quite unusual. I've been looking info on it but didn't see any trade marks on the hull so can't figure out what it was. There was no forestay to bow attachment point. Instead there was a forward looking boom with a topping lift that supported the jib tack. I don't know if the mast rotated or if there were some articulation points to point the sails into the wind. It was decorated for the Christmas boat parade in Savannah so the sails weren't up. Has anyone seen this style of boat?

I saw one in Nantucket several years ago. I don't remember it looking that clunky but I believe it had made a trans atlantic crossing. In this version at least it looks very heavy. I don't know if I would want to be married to it for a passage. On the other hand it may have certain advantages which I hope other posters can elucidate.
For one thing, it could theoretically always be at an optimal angle to the wind. On the other side, that mast has got to be a upwind killer. Love to hear other opinions.

Yup, looked a little slimmer but that's it. So are you always close-hauled when going upwind?

Wow. He's asking 179 large, and willing to take a farm tractor for trade. This just opened up a series of questions in my mind, including maybe some of the owners opinions as well.
Now, I have seen some VERY nice farm tractors in my time, and some over-rigged pigs too.
Is there some correlation here?

Saw one in Maine last summer but it was a ketch( I guess) it had 2 of those rotating mast things. I would think it would be simple to tack or jibe.

It IS a nice looking boat. As a cruiser it sure has a lot of useful hanging-out spaces. Can it sail? .... let me see what's in my wallet.


But seriously, how strong do you think the mast partners have to be to support that rig? Dang! I hope the engineers went to a top 20 school.:neutral:
