Strainer needed for bilge suction line?

I recently purchased a 1994 C270 and was checking out the bilge. I found the bilge pump suction hose to have a piece of screening material ty-wraped over the end. With minimal debris on the screen the suction line ia almost sucked closed. I have a diaphram type bilge pump, do I really need this piece of screen? I also found screen over the end of the shower drain hose. I thought the diaphram pump could pump anything and perhaps the screens aren't necessary. Dave

Just looked at a dockmates brand new 270

and it has a piece of screen over the bilge pump intake as does my '94. Don't know if it's absolutely necessary but I'm leaving it.

Strainer

My 270 had the same screen...with the same problem. I purchased a strainer from west marine. Works ok. Doug
