I have a stock stove/oven on my 1984 34' Hunter, which uses kerosene to burn, but has to be primed with alcohol. I've followed the manufactureres instructions, but after I've burned off the alcohol to heat the burner, and opened the kerosene valvue, all I get is a high flame and soot all over everything.

Am I doing something wrong? Is the stove broken? How do I get this thing to operate? Should I just replace it with a Coleman LP gas stove? All help is appreciated.

It sounds as if you are doing it right. When the kerosene burns off it will have heated the burner enough so when you turn the fuel back on the kero will vaporize instead of being a liquid. The flame height should be controlled with the valve. Perhaps the filter at the bottom of the burner needs to be replaced, or some other components. Is the stove still current? You can then call the mfg for answers and parts, if needed.

It sounds like you need to use a little more alcohol, sounds like the kerosene isn't vaporizing. That said we ave never really used the stove in ours (kenyon I believe). You can still get parts but the stoves I don't think are made anymore. Holland Marine products here in Toronto sells parts- Princess or force ten I think.

We have not used ours because it scares the bejeez out of my wife and her running around at my elbow with the fire extinguisher in her hand scares me worse than the stove!!. We use the BBQ or an electric fry pan. My wife is an AC addict.

P.O. had changed out to a propane stove before I got my boat.. I have used various kerosene and diesel and gasoline stoves over the years and definitely agree with Richard.. the generator, the part that ya heat to vaporize the liquid fuel, sounds like it is not heating enough and/or the air inlet to the burner is plugged in some way.. To check the heat , next time after the alcohol is almost 100% burned out, just crack the valve and admit just a small squirt of kerosene and close the valve.. as that burns down, do that again until it starts burning blue.. if ya can't get it to blue flame, Best to cool, depressure, drain, and disassemble and clean and carefully re-assemble .. Ya may find bugs /dirt in the air passages.. Good Luck..

My boat also had a really nice pressurized kerosene stove/oven. A previous owner had replaced it with a dorm fridge. I installed a non-pressurized alcohol Origo two-burner on top of the fridge. Works really well with none of the pressurized or propane conversion headaches. I was given the stove which I sold in a day.
