Stove damper

Blue Fin, V1553, came with a solid fuel (wood) stove. I rarely use it,
however because of frequent backdrafts (or downdraft) that quickly
fill the cabin with smoke. I've run across the words "Barometric
Damper" and wonder if this is a clue as to the cure.

Any ideas? What kind of on board heater, if any, is on your boat.

Thanks,

Victor

I have about a 15 inch jointed extender to the smokehead, avail at any stove shop. When I want to use the stove I put the extender on and flex it so it is bent more or less downwind. Seems to take care of the backdraft problem. I usually leave the "rain cap" head off when I am using the stove and maybe that helps.

I burn briquettes, sometimes with a few spruce knots for aroma. Start it with a paper towel with lamp oil. We use the stove a lot cruising in Maine. Dries out the cabin and is a treat. I'd hate to be without it. We never use it under way.Nicholas Walsh

do you have any trouble with smoke getting on the main? does your
elbow flex 90 degrees?

Thanks,

Sounds like a good idea--
The rain cap--just unscrews?

someone once warned me against briquettes--CO poisoning--but i have a
detector on board, and most of it should go up the chimney anyway.

do you have 45 degree elbows or 90?--

I always burn the stove with the mainsail cover on, in case of sparks. The briquettes seem to burn very clean, and I have never noticed soot. Of course I probably burn just a dozen fires a season, no more than that.

The rain cap is just pressed into the smokehead. I did put a safety wire on it connecting the rain cap to the smoke head "base" pipe so it won't go overboard, as it once did when a halyard looped.

The extender has several joints in it so it in effect can bend about 70 deg. or so.

I believe carbon monoxide is a concern with burning any fuel - not enough oxygen for combustion produces it, I am told - so of course I leave some ventilation, usually the fwd hatched cracked and the top panel in the companion open, at minimum.Nicholas Walsh
