Hi, I'm a new owner of a 1988 Catalina 30 (first boat!). One of the things I need to fix before spring is a burner on the stove. The burner fractured at the base where the inlet was attached. I assume it is the original propane stove, but I cannot find any labels that indicate the manufacturer or model of the stove. Here's a picture of the stove and the broken burner. Does anyone know the manufacturer and where I can get replacement parts? Thanks much for your help.

we have the same year same boat, and can bring home the owners manual and info on the stove on Sunday. Likely you'll get some help before then but I'd be happy to supply everything we have on ours. Gosh, our burners work great, it is the oven we can't get to work......... :)

Thanks, that will be great. Actually, we never even tried the oven, but I think it works. Haven't really used an oven much on boats we've chartered.

It is most likely a SEAWARD, look 'em up on the internet. Then call them. Or open the top of the stove, remove the burner holders and lift it up.

The trick to working the oven is to use the RIGHT burner for a bit first, before you light the oven. It's usually in the instruction manual.

LuzSD,

I am still researching my stove issue and someone from Seaward told me it is a Model 2122 (based on the picture). They sent me to Sure Marine for the burner, but of course they don't make them anymore! He has a newer version that might fit, so I still would welcome any info you have about the stove. Mine is 4 hours away and covered with shrink wrap, so I can't look at mine until spring.

Regarding your oven problem: Sure Marine has an oven troubleshooting guide on their website that you might find helpful --> http://www.suremarine.com/stove-repair.htm

well I think I figured this out.....
Regarding the stove parts, attached are two pages from a great notebook left on our boat when we purchased it 4 years ago. It is listed as
Tech Talk by Richard Dickens
A collection of Owner Modifications , Experiences, Revisions, Maintenance and Care... for Catalina 30 and other similar yachts

It was first written in 1988 but has been revised multiple times through1994. What is really cool about it is I think someone actually typed this thing up, all 400+ pages. It is packed with so much information that is all owner based.
We spent the first 6 months on our boat enjoying every page of this and the Main Sheets on board.

Anyway, these are the two pages to do with what might be of help fixing the Hillrange stove, but it sounds like you may have already found our more than I am giving you here.

I should probably offer to make copies of this notebook; it is too good to keep to ourselves!

LuzSD,

Thanks for the brochure images. However, your stove burner looks different than mine. I think you have an alcohol stove and mine is propane. I talked to the stove expert at Sure Marine today, but he says that there is no place to get a replacement burner for my stove. Dang! He suggested that I may be able to have the parts welded together so I guess that is my only option for now.

By the way, it's OK to rub it in about the weather. We know there are some drawbacks to living in the North Country, but we still like it. I have a question for you, though. We will be in Encinitas in March and I've been looking at rental sailboats for a bit of day sailing. Would you recommend San Diego harbor or Mission Bay? Thanks.

Lou

Loubert, sorry not to be able to help you, .. but I got some great info from you and my husband laughed when I brought down the 20 pages of pictures and blow by blow description on how to get our oven working!! So thanks for that. BTW, ours is propane too, have use of the burners, no problem. Good luck on yours!

Well not to worry, we are in a real cold snap right now, really cold for us and it looks like it is going to hang around a while so we have our jackets on too!

Yes, I can help regarding renting a boat. I would chose SD, Shelter Cove Marina is the home of J-boats for rent and the are really active. There are other boats anywhere from 22-40+ that I think are rented out of Harbor Island, and a few out of Shelter Cove. You can sail in the Bay which is very interesting always and have fun all day or go out off Pt. Loma and beyond. Let me know if I can get any specific information for you, I'd be happy to do that. March will be great!

LuzSD,

Thanks for the San Diego recommendation. I'll check for boats there.

I have good news to report on the stove! I was able to get exactly the burners I needed through Torresen Marine in Michigan. I just sent them a picture of the stove and burners and they were able to order the parts from Seaward. They arrived yesterday and they're perfect. Yeah!

Hi Loubert. I am going through the same motions trying to light the stove on my newly axquired 89 Cat 30 that came with no manual. It is the Seaward Hillerange Mod 2122 as someone else mentioned with two burner controls on the face and a third knob that won't turn or go in or out. I am reluctant to force it until I find out what it is. Perhaps it is the oven control. I do have instructions mounted on the inside of the oven door as to how to light the pilot however I have been unsuccessful so far. If you learned any tricks they would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance
Richard

Richard and Lou,

I'm glad you're having success in finding out more about your stoves. Up in reply #4 I suggested you get a hold of Seaward, and I'm glad Torreson did that for you.

Seaward contact: 3721 Capitol Ave, Whittier, CA 90601-1732 (562)-699-7997, Dennis Xtn 210

Get the stove # from inside the cover of the stove and call Dennis. He knows all about these units.

IIRC, the oven burner knob does not push in like the other two. Light the right burner for awhile, then try the oven.

Good luck.

Thanks for your help, Stu. I guess I should have tried Seaward directly, but got sidetracked somehow. I haven't tried my oven (the boat is 200 miles away and shrink-wrapped) so I look forward to testing it out in the spring.
