I own a Hunter 37-c and I'm currently cruising in Mexico. I would like to replace my current and, I think, original HilleRange stove/oven. Has anyone done this? What model did you use and what did the retrofit involve?

I have the original Bomar hatches and I need to replace the hatch seals/gaskets. Can anyone tell me where I might find these, or what you have used as a replacement?

Thank you ... tj edwards

Hi TJ,

You can order gasket material by the foot for Bomar hatches from Pompanette in Florida (www.pompanette.com). I have the original Kenyon stove - kerosene (and I think I am one of the few who sings its praises). Last time I purchased parts from HMP Marine in Toronto, but they are getting harder to find. I don't know about your stove, but if you are planning on changing to another fuel - ie propane - it is usually pretty expensive to do it right: bottles, safe storage lockers, solenoids, gas sniffers and the stove itself. I would guess up to $5000, depending on whether you buy new or used, install yourself, etc. Good luck!

My stove is not quite as old as Jim's. But the original pressurized oven/range is in my garage if anyone wants it. In it's place is a dorm fridge. On top of that is a two-burner non-pressurized alcohol stove. In March we finished the Erie to Tampa trip. All I can tell you is that the three of us ate very well, cooked a lot of great meals. So I still have not seen the value of changing to propane. Maybe if I had to have an oven.

P.S. Picture 1 is Ron Pearson's conversion to propane. Picture 2(winter layup) is mine. You can see how I solved the portlight issue. You can barely make out the stove and dorm fridge.

It all depends on the fuel...what you have now (not clear) and what you want to end up with.
We have lived on our 37c for some time, and unlike Ed, cooking to us means baking and roasting, so I need an oven. He's right on about the Origo stovetop though, as far as it goes, it does a great job!

We (after 3 years with the Origo on top of a small AC/DC fridge) opted for a NEW Hillerange fueled with Propane. At the same time, we installed a Dometic propane fridge. It has worked out beautifully!!! We use our amps far more usefully than running a compressor.

The whole thing cost MUCH less than 5K. Propane here is HALF the cost of gasoline, is clean, safe, (When handled with care and prudence), odorless, and above all cheap and effective. There are a whole lot of Btu's in a 5-gal bottle of propane.

stove retrofit

Thanks guys for your reply. I failed to say the my stove already is a propane stove. I'm all set up regarding propane; it's a new propane stove/oven I'm looking for. I'm having a devil of time finding one that fits in the slot, even if I were to cut the slot to enlarge it. Not having an oven is not an option so speaketh thine spouse.

Ed, I'm not familiar enough with this web site to find the pictures you posted. Could you tell me how to see them. Is your Hillerange brown? My HilleRange is brown and I'm looking for something in stainless steel.

Jim thanks for the info on the gaskets. I'll need about 12 feet of of the material. Do the weather seal strips from the hardware stores work? Has anyone tried them?

Thanks guys ... tj

TJ, Ron sold that boat and went RV'ing. But I don't think he would mind if I gave you his e-mail. Write me from here(click on my name) and I will send it on. I thought he had posted the whole install but I can't find it. The picture is here in "Hunter Owner Modifications" but not much text. We do know that it is a Force 10 3-burner(http://www.go2marine.com/category.do?no=12194&mfrno=138). I posted this link because I don't think our SBO site sells them.

TJ, my boat came with a stainless Hillerange

2 burner with oven. Model is 2174-2001. fits fine, though not much gimble movement room, but I keep it locked in place 99% of time.

I pulled the original kerosene stove from my 79 and am currently in the process of installing a Dickinson stovetop. I decided I did not need the oven.
The stove top fit into the existing cut with no additional cutting, and I installed a wooden rail in front to hold everything in place.
My problem is deciding on and installing the simplest lines.tank system, which you already have installed. That is in work.
