Stove -- Alcohol or Gas?

My 1977 C-22 came with the slide-out galley (lucky me). I haven't used it yet, but I have a question: I assumed from the looks of my stove that it was a white-gas type. It has a pressure plunger, etc, just like Dad's old Coleman. However, I believe it is original, and all the postings on the topic refer to "the original two-burner alcohol stove." Could I have an alcohol stove? How do I know? I've never actually SEEN an alcohol stove, you see. I'd rather not have an explosion when it comes time to play around with the thing. BTW--It is a Kenyon Homestrand model. Thanks to anyone who can help.

hello Rick, I have the Sam stove in my 22. yep, it is an alcohol stove. What you do is take it out of the boat to a safe place to test it keep a bucket of water close by for emergency extinguishmeant. under each burner is a small bowl, pump the tank about 20 times, open one of the burner knobs and fuel will begin to flow out of the burner. It will trickle down to the bowl (DO NOT PUT MORE THAN ABOUT A TABLESPOON OF FUEL IN THE BOWL this is the part people get wrong in my opinion ) close the burner knob light the alcohol in the bowl. When the fuel is almost consumed, open the burner, if there is still flame in the bowl, it may light its self, if not use a match to light it. Some times you have to repeat this bowl burning. You will need to perform this bowl burning with the other burner ( each burner is independent ). If you shut the stove down for more than about five minuets, you may have to repeat the bowl lighting bit. if you do this testing outside, it will give you much more times to practise this bowl lighting with out setting fire to anything. john

Lucky You :)

I have never used the pressurized alcohol stove that shipped with some c22's. I have heard that it is a little cantankerous. The nonpressurized Origo is completely trouble free; too bad you don't have one of them. They are quite expensive (don't know why, there isn't much to them), so I would try to get comfortable with what you have before thinking about replacing it. Good Luck, Pete

Not so bad

I have a larger alcohol stove/oven combo. I just recently used it for the first time. It works great. The reason for burning off a little fuel first is to heat up the assy feeding the fuel to the burner. Once this gets hot, the alcohol inside starts to vaporize and comes out as a gas when the valve is then opened. Take your time and as stated by others, burn off a little alcohol first then try to light. On mine, I can hear the vaporized gas start to come out when I open the valve a little. You also may want to get a long lighter as they make for charcoal grills...keeps you from burning the hairs off your hand. Oh yeah, and do not stand over the stove when lighting...always stand to the side in case it flames up...which means the gas has not vaporized yet. Paul

Alcohal is Safer

The reason they put alcohal stoves on sailboats is that 1)alcohal doesn't burn as hot as gas, flame ups won't start your curtains aflame unless you get carried away and 2) you can put alcohal out with water. It is best to practice with the stove removed from the boat. With pratice you will get along fine with Alcohal and it is the safest way to go.

Thanks--It works!

Thanks, people! I just fired the stove up on the back porch. It worked fine. I understand there are rebuild kits available. Are there safety concerns if I just leave mine as-is, as long as it's working? BTW--Alcohol does certainly burn cooler than gas. It took more than ten minutes to boil a small pot of water, lid on. That's an inconvenience I can live with, for safety's sake. I like the stove, but I'm still not convinced the whole galley unit is worth the space it takes. Have people out there built smaller units to replace the galleys? Any pictures out there? Thanks again. This forum has been of great assistance to us during our first C22 season.

Sell it here!

If you decide you don't want it, there are about a million people looking to buy it from you. Head on over to the Boats for Sale tab on the home page, then click on Gear Here Classifieds. List it there & it'll probably be gone before you can say "CatalinaOwners.com RULES!" ;-) LaDonna

stove

hello Rick, if your stove is working, there is really no need to do anything to it. The company has a web site that I used to get a new rubber pump piston ( Coleman uses leather pistons ) that I just couldn't find anyplace else. It does take a little time to boil water so don't heat up more than you need at the time. I don't use the ice chest for anything except storage so I don't need to pull the galley all the way out. but if you are not using it you don't need to pull it out at all. john
