Storm oil

Just curious, but does anyone have personal experience using oil to calm troubled waters? It's a common reference in older sailing stories but I don't see much about it in more recent books. Adlard Coles in "Heavy Weather Sailing" discusses it but his conclusion seems indecisive. He claims it must take large amounts, barrels, of oil. Captain Kenealy in "Boat Sailing in Fair Weather and Foul" (available free as an E-Book on-line at several sites) says 2 quarts an hour is all that is needed. Adlard Coles suggests that "storm oil" is available, and that it should be a heavy oil. I wouldn't think of the traditional fish oil as "heavy". The Captain uses "paint oil" which I suspect is linseed oil. just curious.
