Storm News from NC

My house is located at 35.37N 77.23W approx.
Storm is now at 35N and 76.4 W

Lots of trees going down in the area, still have power and internet (I'm amazed). Underground utilities are the key.

Lots of rain and local flooding of yards with poor drainage. A friend has white caps in his back yard.

No idea if Windward Jan will ride this one out. I put out a pattern of three anchors equally spaced in a small creek in about 6 feet of water. I used a 35 pound CQR, a 25 pound Danforth, and a 40 pound Danforth.

The path of the storm over the pamlico will let it keep its' strength as the water is warm and land interaction not too much. New England needs to be ready. The Pier at the Sheraton in Atlantic beach got destroyed. Have stayed there several times, too bad.

My friends in Smyrna likely got a major storm surge and their house may be a problem, not up on stilts but maybe up about 4 feet from ground. They have lost cars before in past storms.

Great that you still have power and 'net.. Sounds like ya did the correct prep for the boat.. back in 1979, Hurricane Frederic came into Mobile with 130 mph winds .. We secured my brother's boat the same way.. She rode the storm up the Dog River just fine but when we went to get her, the Danforth that had carried the highest winds had buried itself so deep into the mud/clay/sand that we had a lot of trouble bringing it up.. Ended up with 4 folks on the rail, then winching until she heeled a bit more.. then everyone over to the other rail .. wait a few minutes then winch in again and repeat.. after about an hour it broke free.. She held just fine.. Had a very liittle rainwater that had come in through the companionway boards and slides but nothing serious.. His house had an oak fall through the kitchen so it was moored in a worse place ;~).. Best to ya, Dave..

I'm off my rather exposed mooring to a spot around the corner (Piney Cove Elk rive N. Chessy) well protected from E-NE-N-NW-W, exposed to the SW-S-SE, sure hope the forcasted track holds. Two Danforths 40lb and 30lb in a serial set in 5-6' of water. With the 180 deg. swing projected, did not want to risk getting 2 lines wrapped.
Right now NE 20-25 some rain band have gone through.

Thanks for the reports from the front lines, so to speak.
We will be on the front line in NY over the next day or so.
It is nice to know what we may be in for.
It is very exciting for all the wrong reasons.

A good friend in New Bern lost cars and buildings as the salt water rose to 3 feet ABOVE the 100 year flood level. Really bad ju-ju down there.

Just heard that first landfall was at one of my favorite spots, Cape Lookout. Sorry to hear about the Sheraton pier. They have been saying on the news that NC did not fair too badly. Flooding all the way up in New Bern would seem to contradict that.

Spent Thursday driving to New Bern from SC, removing blades from wind gen, stripping canvas, and weaving a spider web with docklines. Friday morning assisted dockmaster and other skippers at Bridgeton Harbor with their boats. Having done all we could do for self and others, departed marina afternoon for the west. Encountered grid lock on US 70 in Goldsboro at junction with I-495. Torrential rain and crosswinds on I-95 and I-20 to Camden SC.Checked a couple motels in Fayetteville area, price double to triple normal if you could find a room. Went all the way home.
Called the dockmaster this morning, call went to voicemail.
Friends in Little Washington came through OK, house dry, but 4 ft plus in garage.

Latest News on Windward Jan

Some friends took a ride up Adams Creek to check on my boat and they reported it is still floating and looking just like the day we left her. They noted it might have dragged a bit closer to the tree line but it looked just fine. It was pounded on for 8 hours with about a 10 foot storm surge. The three anchors equally spaced seems to be the trick for this kind of weather. I'm guessing the dragging was just the anchors setting deeper as the force increased. I will probably leave her where is for a few more weeks until further threats in the Atlantic become less probable.

I wasn't happy with the 40 pound Danforth as it is not a real Danforth, but a knockoff and I need to make some improvements on it. I used 35 feet of 3/8 chain but the nylon rode was hastily prepared using what line I had available. Seemed hard to set in mud while the real danforth and CQR dug right in. I used a power boat to set the anchors so plenty of power to set them but it took a few tries with the 40 pounder. To get that one to set we let it sit on the bottom and applied a very slow pull before adding some power to dig it in good. I think I'll pick up a Manson Supreme or maybe a couple while in New England next week at Defender (if they have them in stock) and use them for storm anchors. Given my location I'm sure this is not the last time I'll be preparing.
