Seeking recommendations for storm tactics and equipment for a H29.5. I'm specifically interested in the best configuration to heave-to in winds over 50 knots and breaking seas over 10 ft. Since nearly every boat performs differently I am hoping someone out there has heavy weather experience with a H29.5 that they can share.

The options I'm considering include the following:

1. A 70 sq.ft. trysail in combination with a 8' para-anchor off the bow with a pennant line

2. Getting a 3rd reef for the main

3. Using a drogue off the stern

I'm open to any and all suggestions provided they provided satisfactory performance on a H29.5 or similar design.

Thanks, John

For sure you will need a trysail and the track on the mast. You will also need a storm jib and jib tracks. A drogue for heaving to is a good way to ride out those weather conditions. I would also have a thorough check of all systems on-board before you leave.

...but I have to ask, where are you planning to go that you will be seeing weather like this??

I would not honestly consider storm sails or drogues for a coastal cruiser. We all get caught in thunderstorms now and then but they are usually short lived 2-3 hours tops with not much sea built up. We usually heave to with a reefed main and a partially furled headsail running the engine if needed. There is no substitute for following the weather and forecasts and allowing them to dictate the route and schedule always within the capabilities of the boat.
