My boat is docked in fresh water and all of my hand tools are plated. Wrap your sensitive tools in rust inhibiting waxed paper and keep them covered.

I have a dry boat so no rust problems... Ok no one is going to believe that. Truth is, I am always working on my boat so tools are covered in a film of engine oil and diesel. No need for further protection!

Along those lines.. I have used Zerust drawer lining material, which is supposed to release a rust-inhibiting vapor to protect against rust and corrosion. It's great for lining the bottom of tool boxes, storage areas and drawers, is non-slip and easily cleaned. You can get either 12" or 22 1/2" wide rolls, 118 inches long at Lowes.. They claim that the rust inhibiting properties will last for up to 5 years. I also usually throw a few desiccant packets in my tool boxes just for good measure

When I was a Gunners Mate in the Navy, we used this on pretty much any metal that you didn't want to rust (including machine guns mounted externally exposed to salt spray). I continue to use it to this day. Wipe your tools down with this when you're done, and put them away. If you're going to leave them for a while, wrap them in a cotton cloth (used t-shirt) sprayed with it.

Boeshield T-9™ !!!!! ... a wax-like spray used on aircraft and its electrical systems to prevent corrosion.
Especially good for preventing 'micro-crystals' of salt from attacking the metal .... that 'grey film of dust' that covers every inch of an ocean going boat's insides.

Also good for electrical/electronics connections, and any other 'rustable' metal: tools, vee belt sheeves (when boat is laid-up), etc.

T9's great stuff. Throw away your WD 40 and get this and PB Blaster for all your household needs!

I also find USE helps keep 'em clean. I use mine a LOT!

I use an old military ammo container for my tools. It seems to have rubber grommet all the way around the edge of the lid which keeps moisture out. My guess is tht you can still buy these at surplus stores for a low price. Although heavy, It's a great container.

As per MaranaF, my boat tools seem in constant use, so maybe my protectant is elbow grease

I do sometimes remember to wipe the steel tools with a greasy rag, especially if the rag was oily for another reason (oil check, cleaning,etc)

you can get theses boxes on line from Casto trading co......just google it ...they useally have about 3 different sizes....and you can also tell them i sent you......only because i like for my positive connections to know who is talking about them ...no money in it for me what so ever....just friends helping friends.....

Two sets.

One small set of common things--a few screw drivers, pliers, common wrenches, adjustable, and vice grips--that stay in the cockpit, ready for minor battles. These see lots of salt and don't look to great, but last a few years anyway. And a good set that doesn't get put away with salt on them.

Like boats: ventilation. I use our nav station desk as my tool box. I use a kitchen divider to keep things separated. It gets opened a lot, the tools are handy, and I put 'em away clean.
