The situation at the WTC has forced me to winter store my boat on Staten Island this year as opposed to Huntington. In SI, they leave the mast up all winter. Is that safe?

Mike, I started out trying to express my feelings

about what you all have been thru. I can't. The words are not enough. We love you. Enough said. What year, make and size is your boat. Leaving the mast and rigging up is not a problen on many boats as long as a few tips and ideas are employed. I'm sure that if you post that info you will get some very good tips. Ray

Winter with mast up.

At our marina on Lake Erie with it's fierce North winds about 75 percent of boats leave the mast up. About half of those are on custom cradles. This will be my fourth winter, first with mast unstepped. I have never seen nor heard of any problems. I suppose it would be nice to position her head(or stern) to prevailing winds but we don't get that choice. Last year she faced South(link below), this year West. Picture is in Spring, right before launch. For the Winter she is covered, stem to stern.

Mast up

Mike, if I am not mistaken the East River is open to boats during certain times of the day. I would check with the Coast Guard you just might be able to bring you boat back to Huntington Good Luck Charlie

East River Should be Open At Times

Mike, I work in Manhattan and can see the Hudson River from my office. We see the the Coast Guard stopping recreational/other traffic all the time with their armed ships. Once they board and confirm your vessel poses no risk, they will let you through. This was before we started retaliating as a country though. Check with the Coast Guard (check with the Eatons Neck station) they should let you through at certain times. Staten Island is far from Huntington so if you'd like to work on your boat over the winter and spring it'll be tough.
