Anybody have any clever ideas for storage shelves for the O'Day 25? I want to increase the shelf & storage area for food & such. Has anyone put shelves in the V-berth?

thanks,

Years ago I went out and bought a half dozen Rubber Maid 2.5 gal. plastic containers with lids and I use them to this day for food storage under my settees. I bought some larger deaper containers for the V birth compartments. The good thing about them is that they seal out the air and moisture and this is what's needed for flour type mixes, instant coffee, cool aid, and Etc. I also have two long wider shallow plastic containers that just fits through the hatch opening that can slide more aft under the settees. I use these for my rain gear, sail repair kit, and the odds and ends that I need to keep dry to avoid mildew.
I built a shelf over my galley cabinet a few years ago when I installed my new stainless steel sink and changed over my galley cabinet.
I find that it's hard to claim space on a small boat. I get so used to carrying perhaps more things that I really need for my over night cruises and as a result, my cabin always appears cluttered. So I've decided that there are some obvious solutions to space problems that don't really require a lot of work.
I have two quarter birth mattresses that fit under the cockpit and unless you're as tall as Wilt the Stilt Chamberlain, they really aren't needed. Next year, I plan to omit them and use that area for storage space. In fact, my extra 28 quart cooler can fit in there. I have a fifty quart Igloo behind my companionway step that is good for up to three days. So I can gain about 4" of space which really doesn't sound like much, but it's a lot easier to slide my overnight bags on the fiberglass than the mattresses, plus, I have two compartments in that area that I have never really used because they were hard to get at with these two mattress on them. That little tool box pictured in the Starboard cubby hole is jam packed with stainless steel bolts, screw, and hardware extras, and it's too heave to slide over a mattress. It will be much easier to slide out of there when I need it.
So sometimes you just need to think out of the box, and you can come up with a solution to finding space whether it be on a O'Day 222 or a 25.

I moved my batteries to a platform that I tabbed athwart ships. This freed up the little handy area just inside the deep locker on the starboard side of the cockpit. That is a great place for tools, cleaning supplies, and cooking utensils for when I am using the rail hung gas grill.

In addition, I split and hinged the cover to the little cubbyhole under the gangway stairs. That makes acces easier.
Another thin I did was hang a large elastic deep pocket net from sears fore and aft just inside the same deep cockpit locker as close to amidship as I could, and it is GREAT for storing the hatch boards, boat hook, and just about everything else. I need to take a picture of that.

Below, the wench picture was random and I can't delete it for some reason. There is a funny story attached to that that I titled " life seal does not make good wench grease"
