I own a 1975 C-27 and have long been frustrated that it lacks something that my old Bristols all had--the handy storage compartment inside the cockpit, roughly under the winches for handling the headsail. Is there any reason that I can't cut in a hole for such a compartment? Has anybody had experience with this? Any ideas? Thanks.

comming box

I have a 71 cat27 and have a box installed below the main winches. My came on the boat and was made from wood. Make it out of something else. I keep rebuilding mine since water lays in it whenever it rains.

Look at later models

Later model 27s have coaming storage - you could compare with your configuration and/or discuss with Catalina to figure out what changes might be required for your boat.

My '77 C27 has coaming boxes that....

...appear to be factory installed. A quick check of the factory parts list shows coaming boxes available at $45.00 per. Check with Catalina parts dept to determine whether you need old or new style boxes, then fax your order to them. Coaming boxes

I bought two at a swap meet cuz I had the same problem. Took me a TOTAL of one hour to measure, mark, cut & install the boxes. Of course I measured about 3 times but they came out perfect. I love them! And if you do decide to build your own, which shouldn't be too difficult, you *can* make them from wood. I would just strongly suggest liberally coating them with epoxy as a sealant. Paint over them & they'll look fine. Rob's are made this way, and up here in the Pacific NW, we get LOTS of rain! LaDonna
