I have a 2004 Hunter 33 with a 27HP Yanmar 3GF diessel engine. Lately I am having trouble stopping it with the stop button on the engine panel next to the helm. The engine would eventually stop after pushing the button quite a number of times or holding the button down for minutes. I took the panel out and couldn't see anything loose or shorted and the shutoff button worked repeatedly without me doing anything while the panel was out. I have reinstalled it and after working for a few days I am having trouble stopping the engine again by pushing the button. Anyone else have the same problem? I suspect that some wiring connection is loose or being pressured when squeezed behind the engine panel. Would anyone know where I can get a schematic of the engine panel or where the diessel fuel shutoff valve maybe? The Yanmar manual show schematics of two engine panels which look older than the one I have. Thanks.

If you need to do it manually
Look for the lever on the engine that is connected to the shut-off cable and activate it manually. It will spring back to its original position when you are done. This should cut off the fuel flow and stop the engine for you. Do not try to stuff rags , or anything into the air intake and PLEASE do not put your hand over the air intake. It may pull some skin off since a very strong suction is created by the air required to run a diesel engine.

this happened to my H36 with the same engine you have. Adjust the cable by shortening it and it will hopefully solve your problem. abe

However, the fuel cutoff arrangement for my boat is electric, not a manual level that you pull via a cable that eventually activate a valve. The stop button on my engine panel is a red button that when pushed, stops the fuel flow. It is an electric push button so I assume that it is connected to a fuel valve or a fuel cut off valve. Anyone know anything about this arrangement? If there is a manual backup, where will it be? Thanks.

How long do you have to hold it down? Even if its an electric cut-off you have to hold it down until the engine dies. Remember a diesel fires on compression of fuel and air not an electic spark. You have to keep the fuel cut off until the engine is no longer turning. This may take a moment as fuel between the cut-off and the cylinders will need to run out.

I've had the boat 3 years now and I use to be able to stop the engine by pressing the button for a couple of seconds. Now, it may take a few tries of close to a minute each!

Oliver, on mine the button is connected to a
solenoid that pushes a rod. Go to the boat and let someone push the button while you look inside the engine probably on the starboard side. You will see movement take place from a solenoid....adjust it. abe

red button electric...connected to solenoid on engine that moved a lever. You adjust the amount of movement and your problem is solved. abe

Found the solenoid
In my boat the solenoid valve is mounted behind the engine with a cable leading to the starboard side front of the engine where the fuel shut off valve is (just under the throttle). Solenoid retracts the cable when energised (about 2 inches travel). I think my problem is still electric/wiring but it is intermitten so it is difficult to trouble shoot. One thing. When I push the red stop button, even with the engine key off, the buzzer goes off (I think it is from the low oil pressure alarm when the engine is not running). This does not make sense as the engine schmatic shows the key switch cutting the power off to the circuits when in the off position. If someone else with a Hunter 33 and Yanmar panel can try this maybe I will know if this is a clue to my wiring problem. Thanks.
