Stopping M18 Inbroad.

I have just purchase a Catalina 27 with wheel steering and inbroad M18. My last boat was a Catalina 22 with an outbroad. I have read the owners manual and it states to stop the engine I am suppose to pull back the trottle untill it dies. This does not work and I must pull the lever up on the bottom aft of the control panel.It is not marked and I beleive it is the decompression lever which should only be used in an emergency only. This is how the last owner stop the engine but I am been told I need to adjust the throttle on the pedestal. What is the correct procedure? This there any good reference material anyone knows of about matainace on a mid size sailboat(seacocks, head repair, plumbing, wiring,etc....)

Stop the engine

David,I had the same problem a few weeks ago. I also read the manual and tried to pull back the trottle until the engine died. However, moving the trottle forward or reverse has the same effect and will not stop the engine. Upon closer reading of the manual, my manual did say for the M-18 to pull the lever to stop the engine. I was also unsure whether the lever on the control panel was the correct one or not. It should really be marked. Finally it is the proper lever to stop the engine. The decompression lever is physically on top of the engine.
