Stopping Corrosion What is the best method of stopping corrosion and protecting the aluminum parts from further corrosion. Specifically, while the mast-base cast was recently replaced by the last owner, there is corrosion around old rivet holes (and possibly more). I would like to know how others have handled this. Not feeling comfortable using acid on aluminum, I would like some confirmation about using an etch like phosphoric acid prior to a zinc chromate spray. My 1989 h-23 is overall in great shape and I also would like to find Central Florida sailors to sail/race with.

Ow Bill.

It's not good posting your personal info on line. Rich, Corrosion. Zinc chromate is a primer. (some also etch (acid)) It's very thin so that it doesn't show through the finish coats of your chosen treatment. But it isn't intended to stop the corrosion in the first place. That's caused by stainless steel touching aluminum. NOT GOOD. There are many ways to prevent it. A nylon washer is good. Insulating grease is another. That's especially effecting when screw threads have to touch aluminum. I wish I had the link for the stuff but I lost it.

Stainless screw into aluminium, use

never seize. The name says it all.

GOT IT!!! tefgel.com

This thread has been bugging me since it went up. I hate not having the needed info! Fred. I don't think you want to use Never Seize between aluminum and stainless when there is a possibility of water to create electrolysis because the stuff has CARBON in it and that conducts electricity that will shortly destroy the aluminum. How's that for a sentence? Whew. Anyway, Tefgel.com can also be reached at 800 433-BOAT. Now, on to read Alan's link.

Fred F, I don't know about the carbon,

but I've used never seize on all kinds of bolts and nuts on engines with aluminium valve covers, iron blocks and heads, exhaust manifolds with salt water and hot exhaust gasses, SS screws that hold winches onto the aluminium mast, same with SS track to aluminium mast. I have taken apart some of the mast hardware and quite a few of the screws that hold track after a few years and the threads look nice and clean. Maybe I'm just lucky.

corrosion protection

This stuff works in a lot of places - very well. Provides an excellent barrier coat. PENNZOIL MARINE® Z-M CORROSION PROTECTANT Pennzoil Marine Z-M® Corrosion Protectant uses a unique marine formula with Rust-Oleum® corrosion protection. It protects your boat on the water or in dock to prevent the corrosion and rust caused by saltwater and sea air. These conditions are constant threats to marine parts and power systems during and between voyages. Pennzoil Marine Z-M® Corrosion Protectant also provides excellent protection for steering mechanisms and the external surfaces of power tilt and trim plungers. It displaces water on parts, leaving a smooth protective coating that stands up to the elements for 12 weeks of salt spray or 2,000 hours of continuous saltwater protection In most cases, if it is not disturbed, it lasts much longer than it says here. http://www.pennzoil.com/TechData/Pdsheet/DomesticMarketing/Specialty/pdf/Z-LineSprayLubricants.PDF This is also very useful around the boat: CRC 6-56 Multi-Purpose Lubricant lubricates, penetrates, and fights moisture. Loosens rusted parts in or around your boat's engine, while protecting against corrosion. Starts wet engines. Keeps stored tools from rusting. Does not effect painted surfaces. Special formula 6-56 designed specifically for a marine environment. http://www.jamestowndistributors.com/userportal/show_product.do?pid=543&familyName=CRC+6-56+Multi-Purpose+Lubricant --------------------------------------------------------------------- Another good one is: CorrosionX is the most useful and versatile product of its kind. As one customer stated, "It's a complete service facility in a can." And, it's economical. Users estimate that a single 16-oz. can of CorrosionX will outperform and outlast 8 - 10 cans of the popular household "lubricant/penetrant," making it far more economical to use. A supervisor in a maintenance facility for a major oil company called it an "inventory reducer" because they use it for so many different applications. CorrosionX has a 100% Money Back Guarantee - NO IF'S, AND'S OR BUT'S POLAR BONDING Every molecule is engineered with a positive or negative charge. These aggressively seek and bond to all metal surface molecules, displacing moisture and contaminates. Other lubes/penetrants are heavily solvent based and dissipate in the air. CX stays put! FLUID THIN COATING CorrosionX thins out at 3/10,000’s of an inch, so it creeps and crawls to entirely cover and penetrate metal. The layer is so thin, you wont notice it to the touch, but it’s bonded in place and outlasts its competitors. NASA calls CorrosionX "SUPERSAUCE" http://corrosionxproducts.com/corrosionxpage.htm ----------------------------------------------------------------------- This stuff works great on electronics (connectors and plugs) and increases reliability by minimizing effects of moisture in the marine environment: LTE - Liquid tools for experts Electronics Cleaner Cleans and maintains electrical systems fast and reliably. For switches, plugs, relays, printed boards, incandescent, lamp brackets. Application areas Caramba Electronics Cleaner reliably ensures optimal contact, prevents creeping current and removes contact resistance. Our Electronics Cleaner keeps contacts free from corrosion, acts against moisture, creeping currents, voltage losses and secures the trouble-free flow of current. Use Shut off power. Spray dirty contacts lightly. Operate switch repeatedly. Remove dirt with blotting paper, leather, etc. With persistent soiling cleaning process may be repeated. Don’t turn on power before solvent has evaporated. (after ca. 10-15 minutes). Can sprays from any angle (except horizontally). Advantages Removes gummed contact greases as well as oxide and sulphide layers Prevents leak current and removes contact resistors Prevents corrosion on contact Effective against moisture http://www.caramba.de/index.php/en/produkte/produktlinien/lte_liquid_tools_for_experts/elektro/elektronik_reiniger Hope this helps you some.
