Stop control cable MD6A Combi

Hello,I'm working on my Vega and have found that Stop Control Cable for my MD6A is corroded badly.Can't pull the cable to stop the engine. I have MD6A Combi.Does anybody know where to buy replacement cable?Perhaps similar cable that would work.Thanks,Mark

Maybe a bicycle brake/gear control cable would work?

Not sure how to connect it to the engine stop.

Just use pliers to twist cable through the eye (I assume that there
is one but haven't looked)?

Mine (MD6A) is also getting sticky so I have just greased it but I
plan to replace it at end of year.

On mine the sheath is rusted thru and the inner wire is taking a shorter route. This is a must-fix and I don't know what to use either.Alan minke, 2505

I use an old manual choke cable from a car because it has a big knob to pull. If these aren't available you should be able to bodge something from a bicycle brake/gear cable. There are plenty of these around on lawnmowers and the like, so you should be easy to source one in a local hardware shop.How about getting a cheap bicycle brake cable, removing and cleaning up your existing inner cable, then using the new sheath?Alisdair

I had the coroded outer sheath an repaired it with epoxy putty... somehow. lolIt continued to work for some yearsSent from my iPhone

Thank you all for the suggestions. I have found choke cable on Amazon. It is to long but I will cut to around 43". Cost Only $10. It should work. I'll have it in few days.Mark

Hi When I had the Volvo engine and the same problem with the stop cable I replace it with a cable from an old motor bike (Yamaha I think) . It worked very well.

Hi Mark.

Just wondering how you will "terminate" the sheath covering the
cable - ie is there any need to protect it from fraying at each end?
Will you fit some kind of collar at each end? Maybe no need?

What does that mean??Everyone:The important thing that I've learned from this discussion is that the fuel shutoff fittings on both ends will accommodate any appropriate cable and sheath. Just bumping this thread as I plan to replace my stop control
cable next weekend.
Two questions:
Mark (anegadasail@...) mentioned 43 inches as the right
length - is that OK? (Sorry Mark but I want to be sure and save
myself a second drive to the boat)..
Also, how is the cable attached to the fuel cut-off control
lever? (Is the wire just hooked through a hole in the lever or
something fancier?)
I should have checked last time I was out but...

Hi all.
A non-ideal outcome.

I figured out how the stop cable is attached to
the fuel cutoff lever (a pinch bolt).
I also noticed some corrosion in the spiral sheath
for the cable where it passes through a hole into the engine
compartment. Maybe more friction there I thought.

I managed to loosen the nut (in the cockpit) holding
the Tee bar and its housing in position.
I didn't manage to figure out how the cable is
attached to the Tee bar, maybe via the nut on the inside of the
companionway bulkhead?
I was anxious not to be left without a
replacement stop cable so I bought a generic cable & sheath
from a lawn mower repair guy.
I decided to give the existing installation "one
last chance".
I then sprayed rust remover & "penetrating
oil" at the corroded part of the cable & applied grease at
the Tee bar end & the attachment to the fuel cutoff lever.
I then worked the cable (pulling & releasing
the Tee bar) maybe 10 times. Still more friction than I'd like.

Left it for an hour. (Power washed boat. :) )

Came back & pulled Tee bar again. Nice smooth
action. Very little friction.
Of course I checked that I hadn't pulled the
cable loose from the fuel cutoff lever & ran the engine
& stopped it a few times.

least I have a working stop cable and know how it works..

Hi John - when I had my volvo engine I had a lot of problems with the stop cable seizing up especially over the winter. My son was breaking up a yamaha motor bike and I noticed that the control cables looked in pretty good shape so fitted one as a stop cable.
