Stolen Outboard

I had my Hunter 260 in the parking lot at the Lake Mead Marina on Lake Mead. Today I went out for a day of sailing and found that some rat had stolen my outboard motor. It was a Suzuki 9.9 HP remote control electric start. The thief cut the lock securing the motor and then cut the telexes for the throttle and the transmission, the two electric cables, and the fuel line. This idiot was not smart enough to disengage the fuel line quick disconnect and cut the line instead. Well, the reason for writing, other than venting, is to ask for some information. Does anyone know the list price for these motors and the best (cheapest) source for buying a replacement. There are no Suzuki outboard dealers here in Las Vegas. Also, are the throttle and transmission cables an Edison part, a Suzuki part, or something else. Today was a perfect day for sailing on Lake Mead, Clear skies, sixty five degrees, and twenty knots of steady wind. Also, I didn't see another boat on the lake. And, this rat cost me this great day of sailing. Such is life.

Sorry to hear about the loss of your motor. It's a shame. I have a 2001 Suzuki 9.9 long shaft with electric start. No remote controls. I paid $2300 for the motor new in 2001. Steve

Down here

I have a Yamha 8hp 4 stroke with power lift, electric start, remote controlls and paid $3200.00 aus. That was about 3 years ago but I bought another for one of my other yachts four weeks ago and the price had increased to $3650.00aus. A fantastic motor that pushes the 260 along at about 5-6 knots and uses very little fuel. So I guess in US dollars that would equate to about $2600.00 or so?

Replacing Edson cable.

Normally the engine mfr supplies the kit that attaches the cables to the engine. You can get the cables from Edson. The control cables #734-33-10 are $69.00 ea. Contact Ken Martin ken@edsonintl.com and he'll help.

Did you report it?

Having both prosecuted and defended the types of turkeys that do such things, your description suggests that this was done with prior planning. You describe too many things as cut that require special tools and time. The best way to discourage such acts is to catch and prosecute. Do everyone a favor and call the cops with as much information as possible. This is a good reminder for all of us to write down serial numbers and descriptions in case we also become victims. Had the best prices a few years back, but your cost of shipping will be higher - when I bought mine, the cost of shipping was less than the sales tax I would have had to purchase. http://www.defender.com/inflatable_prices.html for engine prices.

Stolen Outboard Report

I did report the loss. Because the boat was in a national recreation area, the park police took the report. I am notifying the three sailing clubs on the lake as well as anyone else that might be in a position to notice someone with a 9.9 Suzuki needing the electric cables. I also notified the marina. I put the notice here on HOW partially as a means of alerting a larger community of the thief among us.
