Recently purchased a used 320. Only problem is a constant odor in the head. Much worse then normal. Have pumped out/rinsed still stinks. It's the standard hand pump head. Is there some type of valve with this head, perhaps it is stuck open? Any suggestions on what to look for would be greatly appreciated.

Head Mistress

Gary, Go to the head mistress column in the expert forums. Peggy can solve all your problems. Suggest you look in the archives first as they are very complete and tell you how to solve the problem/problems. With a head it seldom is one issue, usually several issues together. There is a joker valve which could be part of the problem and the archives tell you all about it. David

Head Odor "Cliff Notes"

Do check out the Head Mistress forum for all the "stinky" details. But here is a short list of possible causesfixes I thought might still be appropriate for this forum. Backflow from the holding tank getting into the head making it smelly - Get new Joker valve. Leaking effluent causing smell - find & fix leak (doesn't take much more than a few drips from a hose fitting to smell the place up... Old hoses permeate the smell - lay warm wet cloth on sanitation hose for a few minutes, then remove & (yuk) smell. If the cloth stinks, replace hoses. Raw water intake stink - sometimes the "clean" incomming water is the problem, see if you can keep fresh water/vinegar in the intake plumbing (see head mistress for how to do this). Not enough venting to the holding tank - anarobic critters (the ones that smell) can take over the breakdown of the waste in your tank. Add aerobic critters (see refrenced forum for "K.O") and add vent, or in leiu of venting, add Odorloss. This doesn't cure world hunger, but sometimes fixing a smelly head seems like it...Just be glad you don't live in florida...

stinky

You might have a leaky joker valve in the head which causes the stink to work its way back into the head Depending on how often you use your head it well wear out I seem to have to replace it about every spring and its good for the season
