Still no water!

Okay - I went to the boat and lifted the little "step" in the aft part of the stern - as I had been told the water fill point was under it. There were a number of men on the boat who own the boats around me - they looked at the pipe inside - and said "That's not for water- that's for an emergency tiller!" So alas- I STILL have no water in the boat, and still cannot find ANY fill point! I've looked and looked. Its a 1984 Hunter 31. I just bought it, and there's no manual. Thanks for any help on this!

try anchor locker

My H30 has a fresh water fill in the bow anchor locker. I would expect this is pretty standard.

The fill should be where you looked

I have a 1985 H31. On it, the FW fill is indeed where you looked, as is the access port for the emergency tiller. Both are under aft most teak plate just in front of the swim ladder. I am positive that is the factory location.

You can look in the boat info section on this site and get a link to a manual, but it wont tell you what you need to know. Even if it did it would direct you to where you have already looked. It will give you plumbing and electrial diagrams however.

If your fill port is not under that teak panel I would suspect the boat was modified. Is there an empty 2" hole under the teak panel? Does it look like a 2" hole was glassed in?

There has to be a fill hose going to the fresh water tank someplace (assuming it was relocated and not just removed). Perhaps you can find where it was moved to by tracing backward from the tank. Do you still have a water pump on board (in the deep cockpit lazerette). Also the hose bib for an external water connection is in the cockpit on the starboard side. Is that still there?

I attached the link for the manual pages for you

It was not clear wether you looked in the anchor

locker or not. You mentioned a rusted anchor among other stuff and said you did not want to get in there at this time. Let's do it another way, look for a water tank and an electric pump. The boat must have a tank of at least 40 gallons and that is hard to hide on a 31' boat. Once you locate the tank look for the filler hose and follow it up to deck. Usual places are under the V-Berth or under the cockpit. In an older boat it may have been removed or replaced with a bladder. Testing the water pressure should have been part of the survey. Good luck, it seems like you need it.

water fill

The 1984 H31 had the water fill in side the aft lazerette on the starboard side. That is where mine was until I moved it to under the rear teak step.

Trace the hose back from the tank.

The tank is located under the aft berth on the starboard side. There are a couple of lids that can be removed to access the vent, fill & exit hoses under these areas.

The forward most hose should be the exit. This should go to the water pump. There is also a vent hose (approx 5/8"). The other hose should be your fill hose. This hose should feed aft (behind the rudder housing) and the travel up (under the carpeting that covers the stern section. Follow that hose and you should find the blue filler cap. I would think it is somewhere in the aft lazarette if it is not under that teak step.

You may want to consider re-routing the hose to the other location once you find it.

water found....

That's exactly where it was Mac ~ aft lazerette. The previous owner had packed all this stuff over it. After an interesting archeological expedition, I found it there. Under the teak step is only the emergency tiller shaft.
Thanks!

Glad you found it!

We are glad you found it. Now is a good time to consider rerouting it to the step next to the emergency tiller.

All it takes is getting a hole saw to bore a new hole and replacing the fill hose which is probably ready to be done by now.

This makes filling the tank much easier and the fill will be above the vent.

So Steve & Mac,

Are you saying that the starboard lazerette was the original point of water fill for these boats? That must have been terriby inconvienient. Was there some year where they changed the location to the teak step, or has my '85 been previously modified?

fill position

Primerese;
The water fill was moved to under the aft teak step for the 85 and later models. I moved mine after seeing an 85 model at the Seattle boat show.
