We are looking at buying a boat for living aboard(during summer)and doing some sailing and diving chartering in the Med(Italy). We have been looking at the Macgregor 65(1995-1998 model), Bavaria 50 and Beneatau 50(2002 and newer). We like the Macgregor for the size and speed and beauty but have heard thats its not a very good blue water boat(Macgregor owners dont yell)but have heard the opposite from some Macgregor owners. We would love some input from all of you(especially from owners of these 3 makes)as to speed, comfort, ease of sailing, ease of water access, maintenance, reliabilty, etc. We know there are better but we have limited ourselves to under 200k price range..Any input would be appreciated and welcomed from ALL types owners..

I think the problem is that this is too much an open end discussion. The boats you name are too different to compare, I believe. There are so many factors that apply based upon what your preferences and needs are relative to what each boat offers.
That said, I am very familiar with the Beneteau 50, a 1999 model. This is a semi-custom 3 cabin model. Very well made, solid, roomy, great performer in all weather conditions. Don't know about the Bavaria or Macgregor.

The M65 is either the "coolest" boat on the block with its smoked black plastic everything or the ugliest thing ever set afloat.

I'm just not quite sure anybody in his right mind could do either of the two things you mention:
1. compare the M65 to the other two boats
2. seriously consider spending more than one very dark overnight inside the M65 and maintain your sanity - I truly believe it is ugly and so "un-marine-like" as to be almost a joke. I guess if you don't like wood it's just fine...

I agree with Stu. The M65 does stand out in a crowd. Long and lanky. It looks as if it would be a rather fast sailor because it looks so narrow. Sometimes looks can be very deceiving. I would do ALOT of research on that one. The other two are of a more traditional design and alot less rare. And the fact it has no wood, no way my wife is gonna go for that. She's gotta have the wood. Alot !
